Psychoanalysis Under Occupation with Lara Sheehi, PsyD and Stephen Sheehi, MA, PhD

a conversation before a genocide

Professor Lara Sheehi is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at George Washington University’s Professional Psychology Program, where she is the founding faculty director of the Psychoanalysis and the Arab World Lab. Lara’s work takes up decolonial and anti-oppressive approaches to psychoanalysis, with a focus on liberation struggles in the Global South. She is co-author with Professor Stephen Sheehi of Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine (Routledge, 2022), which won the Middle East Monitor’s 2022 Palestine Book Award for Best Academic Book.

Lara is the President of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (APA, Division 39), co-editor of Studies in Gender and Sexuality and co-editor of Counterspace in Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society. Lara is also a contributing editor to the Psychosocial Foundation’s Parapraxis Magazine and on the USA-Palestine Mental Health Network advisory board.

Prof. Stephen Sheehi’s work meets at the intersection of cultural, visual, art, and social history of the modern Arab world, starting with the late Ottoman Empire and the Arab Renaissance. His scholarly interests include photography theory, psychoanalysis, decoloniality, Palestine, Race and Islamophobia. 

He is the co-author of Psychoanalysis Under Occupation and Islamophobia: The Ideological Campaign Against Muslims, published by Clarity Press, Inc.

His latest book, Camera Palestina: Photography and Displaced Histories of Palestine, published by the University of California Press, is available for open access.

Voices included in this episode include excerpts of Frantz Fanon in Göran Olasson’s 2014 film Concerning Violence, narrated by Lauryn Hill.
